Mamelodi Sundowns FC is a South African professional football club based in Pretoria. It is one of the most dominant and wealthy clubs in the country, having won 13 Premier Soccer League trophies and one CAF Champions League title. The club’s home venue is Loftus Versfeld Stadium, which also hosts the national rugby team. The club’s motto is, “The sky is the limit.”

History

Mamelodi Sundowns FC was established in 1970 by a group of youngsters in Tshwane. The club was originally named Mamelodi Sundowns United, but later dropped “United” from its name. The club joined the National Professional Soccer League in the 1980s and won its first league title in 1988. The club also joined Orlando Pirates as the only South African team to win the CAF Champions League in 2016, overcoming Zamalek of Egypt in the final clash. The club has also produced many notable players, such as Daniel Mudau, Surprise Moriri, Hlompho Kekana, and Percy Tau.
