Thapelo began his career in a television commercial. He joined an Johannesrburg-based agency and got his first leading role in a commercial within the first two months. Soon after finishing his course, he landed the role of Gabriel in SABC1 soap opera, Generations. In the soapie, he was the bodyguard of the rich lady, Karabo Moraka, a role that was played by the incredible Connie Ferguson. Gabriel went on to have a sweltering love affair with Karabo. Initially, he was to be on the television show for three months, but the viewers of the show loved him a lot, so his stay was extended to six months.

In 2006, he started playing the role of Vusi in the SABC1 drama, Mzansi. He took over the part from Fezile Mpela in the second season. The same year, he became the presenter of Fear Factor in South Africa. Fear Factor aired on e.tv. In the second season of the show, Lungile Radu replaced him because he was busy filming another show at the time.

The actor took over the leading role of Bongani Thwala during the third season of Mtunzini.com on SABC1. He substituted Pepi Khambule in this show which aired in 2009.
